About PTSD

PTSD is different from chronic stress in that the symptoms grow in intensity and significantly affect the ability to lead a normal life. Symptoms usually develop within a few months of the event, but may only appear much later. Some people recover within six months, while others may suffer for much longer.

Anyone can get PTSD in varying degrees of severity, which depends on how a sufferer reacts to the event and the follow-up support received from family, friends and professionals.

Young children with PTSD may suffer from delayed development in areas such as toilet training, motor skills, and language.

PTSD Treatment

You should always see your doctor first, to ensure proper diagnosis and deal with any underlying medical issues, and to establish that hypnotherapy is an appropriate treatment in your situation.

It should be noted that severe cases of PTSD may need to be treated as part of a wider medical programme.

The symptoms of PTSD are often grouped into three categories:

  • Reliving the ordeal: (flashbacks, hallucinations, nightmares, anniversary or reminders of the event)
  • Avoidance: (people, places, thoughts, or situations that are reminders of the trauma: feelings of detachment/isolation and diminished feelings or aspirations for the future)
  • Increased arousal: (excessive emotions; problems relating to others, including showing feelings or affection; difficulty falling/staying asleep; irritability; outbursts of anger; difficulty
  • Concentrating; and being easily startled. The person may also suffer physical symptoms, such as increased blood pressure and heart rate, rapid breathing, muscle tension, nausea and diarrhoea).
